Scallywaggs SPCA Safari

Rheanne makes new friends with some very cute puppies.

In July, Scallywaggs Senior Kindergarten visited the CHB SPCA. The visit was an extension of the learning that the children had been doing about dogs.

Before the visit they compiled a list of questions about what they might see at the SPCA:

  • What will we find at the SPCA?
  • Why are the animals there? What do the animals live in?
  • Where do the dogs sleep? Do the dogs fight each other? Where do the volunteers find the dogs?

The SPCA volunteers were well prepared for the influx of 24-four-year-olds and Martyn, the SPCA's education officer, gave the children a talk that covered what the SPCA does, animals' emotions and what it means to be responsible pet owner. They had a tour of the SPCA premises where they were able to see and touch some of the animals while learning about why some of the animals were there. Armed with clipboards the children completed either a pictorial survey on how many animals they saw or observed drawings of the animals and their enclosures. They were buzzing about all they had seen and heard and thanked their hosts with an enthusiastic waiata.

Scallywaggs Education and Care Services would like to thank Martyn, Jayne, Kerry, Chris, Whispa, Genta and Chopper and the rest of the SPCA volunteers for teaching the children about cats, dogs and other animals they rescue and care for and what it means to be a responsible pet owner."We would definitely recommend a visit to the SPCA to other groups wanting to educate children on responsible pet ownership."
