Scallywaggs Journey
The Ennor's are a farming family from Central Hawke's Bay. In 1986 Jean Ennor felt that she could contribute more to the family farm in some sort of full time working capacity. Jean was watching a television programme about a middle aged woman who was dealing with children from her home. This concept inspired her to consider her own abilities. She had already done a stint nursing and had raised 6 children. Alongside this experience, the family already owned an old property in town, so it was possible, but then again Jean believes anything is! Jean contacted the Education Development Unit to investigate this further. It took a determined business drive from Jean and three council consent applications later, the centre opened in 1988.

Three generations celebrate Scallywaggs 22nd birthday; Jean, Martin and Robert Ennor.
The centre took up residence in Russell Street, where it still is situated today. Initially Scallywaggs started in one converted residential house but today the centre now occupies five buildings. Jean believes that childcare is not just childcare anymore and is proactive in achieving education and care together. Scallywaggs was built on the love and consideration of children and their wellbeing with education weaved in. Over the 22 years of business Jean, has seen huge changes in the Ministry of Education requirements and the delivery of early childhood education. It is for these reasons it is vital to keep current with research and trends in the sector to continue offering the highest quality education and care to children and families.
Four years ago Jean's son Martin, stepped into the role of Managing Director for Scallywaggs Education and Care Services. Martin was involved with the expansion of SPROUTS In-Home Childcare which is now located in 6 regions. "I really enjoy the new career change and challenge that Scallywaggs offers. It's really rewarding to be involved with the family business. It is fantastic to be able to offer a diverse range of early childhood education and care options under the Scallywaggs umbrella. We are committed to offering choice to our families enabling us to meet the needs of the communities we share".
In a small rural community, the numbers of families that Scallywaggs Education and Care have provided services for is huge. It's a thrill to see second generation children now filling many of the spaces available.
